St Andrew Corsini’s Life History

Born on November 30 1302, from the illustrious Corsini family was Andrea Corsini, now known as Andrew, from Nicholas Corsini and Peregrina delgi Stracciabende. He was in a family of 12 children.

He lived as a dissolute youth and grew up being wild. After a rebuke from his mother, he went to Santa Maria del Carmine Church, where joined the Carmelites in Florence in 1318 AD. He was ordained afterwards to priesthood in 1328. He was made prior of his convent after he did his studies in the University of Paris and in Avignon in 1332. He was dubbed the name, ‘Apostle of Florence’ for his holy way of life.

Andrew was then appointed bishop of Feisole by Pope Clement VI and after being reluctant about it for a while,he accepted the nomination as the result of a vision he had, afterwards.

He lived a life full of austerities and built himself a reputation as a peacemaker as he had ended rivalries between political factions of the time. he had great empathy towards the poor as was evident in the way he took care of them. he appointed two vicars to assist him with his diocese to among discipline among his diocesan priests.

It is believed that, as he celebrated mass during the Christmas Eve of either 1372 or 1373, the blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him and gave him the message that he would pass away on the feast of The Three Kings.

He then developed an illness on the following day on Christmas night and died on January 6 1373 or 1374 as foretold. His remains were moved to Florence on February 2 1374 and were later found to be uncorrupted when they were exhumed 11 years later.
