It took 12 years for Vincent’s prediction to be fulfilled. In 1417 his gift as a preacher was made manifest when he traveled to Milan and preached so well that the crowd would not let him leave unless he promises to come back. For over the next 30 years, Bernadine’s reputation and influence skyrocketed over Italy as he the whole country to repentance and a new life in Christ. Unlike most preacher, he got the topics of his sermon not from liturgy but from everyday troubles of the people. He traveled on foot all over Italy. He never remained in one place more than a week.

Trial in Rome

Bernadine was known for his devotion to the holy name of Jesus, so he created the symbol of IHS the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek, in Gothic letters on a blazing sun. The symbol began to appear in churches, homes and public buildings. He came under fire by those who saw it as a dangerous innovation. In 1427 Bernardino was put to trial. Pope Martin v found him innocence and asked him to preach in Rome for 80 days.

In 1438 he had to resign because he had been appointed Vicar General of the observant Franciscans in Italy. The responsibilities of his new position reduced the opportunities to preach. In the year 1442, he was allowed to resign and return to what he loved (preach). Despite his deteriorating health, he set out to the Kingdom of Naples in 1444, but the journey proved too much for him.  He died on May 20 and buried in the Basilica of San Bernardino.
