St Brendan the Navigator was an abbot and one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. He was born in 484 AD in Ciarraighe Luachra near Tralee, Ireland and died in 577 AD in Annaghdown, Ireland. He was also called Brendan of Clonfert, Brendan the Voyager, Brendan the Anchorite or Brendan the Bold. We celebrate his feast day on May 16 every year in the Catholic Church.

Saint’s Biography

Saint Brendan the Navigator was the son of Findloga and the brother of Saint Briga. He became a monk and was educated by Saint Ita of Killeedy and St Erc of Kerry. Brendan became a friend of St. Columba and St Brendan of Birr, St Brigid and St. Enda of Arran. In 512 he was ordained a priest. Later, Brendan built a monastic cell in Inchquin Island, Ireland. Around 559 he founded the monastery Clonfert and the monastery school.
