Saint’s Biography
Saint Caesaria of Arles was born in 465 in Gaul. She came from a noble Gallo-Roman family and was the sister of Saint Caesarius of Arles (Bishop of Arles in 502). Caesaria studied at the monastery founded by Saint John Cassian of Marseille In 512 she founded a convent near Arles which was destroyed in 508 in the war between the Franks and the Burgundians. The great monastery was dedicated to St. John (Saint-Jean) and was consecrated on August 26, 512.
The house had about 200 nuns, many of them widows and served as its first abbess. Caesaria set the rules for the house, among them that all the nuns should learn to read and write and that they should have the exclusive right to choose their abbess. The nun community took care of the poor, washed and patched their clothes.
Death
Caesaria died on January 12, 530 and was buried in the sarcophagus that her brother had reserved. Shortly before she died, she set up a will where she left almost everything she owned in the monastery.
