St Castulus of Rome Life History
St Castulus of Rome was married to St Irene of Rome and served as a chamberlain in the imperial palace of Rome during the rule of Emperor Diocletian.
He was a quietly devout Christian who not only provided refuge for fellow Christians in his own home but also organized religious gatherings within the imperial palace.
Castulus played a vital role in converting numerous men and women to Christianity and then brought them to Pope Caius for baptism. Unfortunately, he was eventually reported to the authorities.
As a consequence, Castulus met a tragic fate in 286 AD when he was arrested, tortured, buried alive and ultimately died as a martyr on the Via Labicana just outside Rome, Italy.
A cemetery bearing his name emerged on this land, and in the 7th century, a church was constructed at the location of his execution.
His relics were later transferred to a Benedictine monastery in Moosburg an der Isar, Germany, around 768 AD, and subsequently, to Landshut, Germany in 1604.
St Castulus is represented in art with a spade, which alludes to his manner of death, being buried alive. This, along with his feast day in early spring, led to his association with farmers and eventually with shepherds.
