St Catherine Laboure’s Life History
St Catherine Laboure, also recognized as Zoe Laboure or Catherine Labore, was born on May 2, 1806, in Fain-les-Moûtiers, Côte d’Or, Burgundy, France.
She was the ninth child in a family of eleven, born to a farming household. From a young age, Catherine felt a calling to the religious life, despite never learning how to read or write.
Her life took a different path when, at the age of eight, she had to assume the responsibility of running the household following her mother’s death and her older sister’s entry into the Sisters of Charity. Catherine worked as a waitress in her uncle’s cafe in Paris, France.
Her journey took a significant turn when she entered a hospital operated by the Sisters of Charity. During her time there, she received a vision in which Saint Vincent de Paul conveyed God’s desire for her to work with the sick. Catherine decided to join the Order, taking the name Catherine.
On July 18, 1830, she experienced a vision of Our Lady, who described a medal she wished to have created.
This medal featured an image of Our Lady on one side, along with the words, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” The other side displayed the hearts of Jesus and Mary.
Our Lady informed Catherine that those who wore this medal would receive abundant graces. This medal became widely known as the Miraculous Medal, and its use and devotion have spread worldwide. Numerous miracles have been reported at her tomb.
Saint Catherine Laboure died on December 31, 1876, in Enghien-Reuilly, France. Her body was found to be incorrupt and remains entombed in her convent chapel. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII on July 27, 1947.
Saint Catherine is revered as the patron saint of pigeon fanciers and pigeons.
