Saint Cyril Biography

Saint Cyril was the brother to Saint Methodius where they were born of Greek nobility. He studied at the University of Constantinople where he later taught Philosophy. He later became a Deacon, grew to a priest and also served as a librarian at the church of Santa Sophia. Cyril became a monk taking the name Cyril officially.
He was later sent together with his brother by the emperor in 861 AD to convert the Jewish Khazar's of Russia of which they succeeded and was able to learn the Khazar's language. In 863, he was sent again in the company of his brother to convert Moravians in their native language. However, some of the western clergies were against it and declined to ordain their students for priesthood.
They developed an alphabet for the Slavonic language that evolved into the Cyrillic language. After a long criticism for the use of the language, the bothers got approve from the Liturgy in the Slavonic language. He was supposed to be a bishop but he died before his consecration ceremony.
