Saint’s Biography
Saint Dorotheus the Younger was born in the 11th century in Trebizond (modern Trabzon, Turkey). He came from a distinguished family but fled as a twelve-year-old to Simiso by the Black Sea when his parents force him to marry. Dorotheus first became a monk in the monastery of Genna under Abbot John, where he gained all virtues and later became a priest.
He got many ecstasies, and he was sent off with an important message from his abbot; to build a monastery on a mountain at Simiso. He asked for permission from his abbot and was given permission to build the house.
Dorotheus founded a new monastery Khiliokum and served as its first abbot. He gave them the rule of Saint Arsenius. By his prayer, he saved a ship in the Black Sea at risk of going under.
Dorotheus had the gifts of prophecy and healing and also foretold future events, including his death, which also followed shortly. He was buried in his monastery. His memorial day is January 5, it was earlier on June 5. He was called “the younger” (junior) to discern him from other saints by the same name. He was a spiritual teacher of Saint Dositheus of Gaza.
