St Elizabeth of the Trinity Life History
St Elizabeth of the Trinity was also known as Elizabeth Catez. She was the daughter of Captain Joseph Catez and Marie Catez. Her father died when the girl was seven, leaving her mother to raise Elizabeth and her sister Marguerite.
Elizabeth was noted as a lively, popular girl, extremely stubborn, given to fits of rage, with great reverence for God, and an early attraction to a life of prayer and reflection. She was also a gifted pianist. She visited the sick and taught catechism to children.
Much against her mother’s wishes, Elizabeth entered the Discalced Carmelite monastery in Dijon, France on August 2 1901.
Though noted for great spiritual growth, she was also plagued with periods of powerful darkness, and her spiritual director expressed doubts about Elizabeth’s vocation.
Elizabeth completed her novitiate and took her final vows on January 11 1903. She became a spiritual director for many and left a legacy of letters and retreat guides.
Death
Elizabeth died at the age of 26 of Addison’s disease, which in the early 20th century had no cure. Though her death was painful, Elizabeth gratefully accepted her suffering as a gift from God. Her last words were: “I am going to Light, to Love, to Life!”
Beatification and Canonization
St Elizabeth of the Trinity was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 25 1984 in Paris, France, and canonized by Pope Francis on October 16 2016 at Saint Peter’s Square, Vatican City.
