Saint Gilbert of Sempringham Biography
Saint Gilbert of Sempringham was born in a wealthy family. When he showed no signs of becoming a soldier he was exiled to France for studies. Gilbert went back home as a master of arts holder and opened a school for the poor in Semprigham specializing more on training religion.
His father allocated him rents from part of his lands which he shared with the poor. He later became the clerk in Bishop Robert Bloet’s household in England. At the age of 40, he was ordained a priest.
when his parents had died in 1130, he returned to his home to spent his inheritance. He founded Benedictine and Augustinian monasteries and provided for the poor.
He also set rules for the set up of an order of nuns later known as the Gilbertines. The order grew to 26 houses but later suppressed during King Henry VIII prosecutions. Gilbert was a target and accused of helping the exiled Saint Thomas Becket which led him to prison.
At 90, some of his lay brothers turned against his authority but he had the support of Pope Alexander III. He lived to over 100 years.
