Saint Gudula of Brussels’ Life History

Gudula was born in Brabant(present day Belgium), to Witger, the duke of Lotharingia and Amalberga of Maubeuge. She lived in a family of four children, a brother named St. Emebertus and two sisters, St. Pharaildis and St. Reieldis.

She received her education from the abbey of Nivelles, by her godmother, Getrude of Nivelles. She spent her time in Moorsel after her godmother passed away, committing to religious devotion, as she was well known for her charity. She dedicated her life to God in 664 AD.

She died between the years January 8 712 AD and laid to rest in Hamme.

Relics

They were first at the church of St. Salvator in Moorsel. In between 977 and 992, the body of the saint was transferred to Saint Gaugericus chapel in Brussels by Bishop Gerardus I of Cambrai where it was a famous cathedral of St. Michael and Saint Gudula.

On June 6 1579, he church was wrecked by the protestant Geuzen and the relics were scattered. Her skull is conserved in the catholic church of Saint Hildegard in Eibingen, Germany.
