Saint Ildephonsus’ Life History
Ildephonsus was born in 607 AD, in Toledo, from a prominent Visgothic family. He lived a childhood full of conflict as civil wars were racked up against the Visgothic Kingdom at the time. He was ordained a deacon in 632 AD by Bishop Eladius.
He also became a monk at the Agali monastery and founded a monastery of nuns. he succeeded his uncle as Bishop of Toledo, after he was elected as a surprise when Eugenius II died in 657 AD. He was reluctant but was compelled by Resseswinth to take the position.
Ildephonsus was a well respected scholar and theologian of his time. In his manuscript, the Visgothic Mass of Ascension, he brings to light that the benefits received from Christ are far more wonderful than the wonder he performed. He points out that the Nicene creed is sufficient knowledge for salvation as it is the glue between God and Man and that it contains two pacts, one renouncing the devil and the other a statement of belief.
He insisted on the frequent partaking of the Holy Eucharist after frequent preparation and he wrote a book, De cognitione baptismi explaining the biblical origins of the sacrament.
Legend has it that as he was praying before the relics of St. Leocadia, the martyr arose and thanked him for the devotion he has to the Blessed Mother Mary. It is also said that on December 18 665 AD, the Blessed Mother appeared to him and rewarded him with a priestly vestment, for his zeal in honoring her.
It is also believed that whenever the Bishop sang Marian Hymns, the church would be flooded with divine light as Mary would descend and sit on the episcopal throne.
Ildephonsus died on January 23 667 and was buried in Toledo’s Basilica of Saint Leocadia.
