Saint’s Biography
Saint Joseph the Hymnographer was born about 816 in Sicily. He was a priest and later a basilica monk after fleeing from Arab invasion in 830. On a trip to Rome, he was captured by pirates. He escaped, and he returned to Constantinople in 850 and established a monastery.
In 858 and 867 he was exiled for opposing the emperor Theophilus. He had this office for almost 20 years until his death on 3 April 886 in Constantinople.
