Saint Lawrence Giustiniani’s Life History

Lorenzo Giustiniani, Italian for Lawrence Justinian, was born on July 1 1382 from the noble Giustiniani Italian family. He grew up to develop a desire of a spirituality of his own as a result of the inspiration he got from his mother’s pious life.

When he was 19 years old, he received a vision of the Eternal Wisdom in the form of a beautiful and noble lady who told him to seek the Eternal Wisdom of God. After this, he saw the vanity in all the material possessions he had authority over and fled from home even from a possibly brilliant marriage.

He then joined the community of Canon Regulars of the Island of San Giorgio in Alga, after he was ordained deacon, in the year 404 AD. He got ordained as a priest in 407 AD and became the first prior of the community in the island after they accepted the rule of St. Augustine.

Lawrence was evidently zealous in pioneering the promotion of the constitutions set up for the Canon Regulars of St, George such that he was appointed Prior General of a congregation.

He was appointed Bishop of Castello in 1433 by Pope Eugene IV and grew the diocese from its shambles. He then became the first Patriarch of Venice for four years after Pope Nicholas V united the Castellon Diocese with the Patriarchate of Grado and moving the Patriarch seat to Venice.

Justinian was well known for his mortification, his deep prayerful habits and his poverty. he also had moving sermons, letters and treatises that were written and are being frequently reprinted up to date.

He died on January 8 1456, in Venice, Italy.
