St Maw was a hermit born in the 6th century AD in Ireland and died in Cornwall, England. We celebrate his feast day on May 17 every year in the Catholic Church.
Saint Maw emigrated from Ireland to Cornwall in England to live as a recluse by the sea near Falmouth. His reputation for piety led to aspiring students, and he helped to spread Christianity in the region.
The area of his hermitage and a holy well are known as Saint Mawes.
