Saint Methodius Biography
Saint Methodius was a brother to St. Cyril born of the Greek nobility who studied at the University of Constantinople and began to teach philosophy there. He became a priest and was together with his brother by the emperor in 861 to convert the Jewish Khazars of Russia and they successfully did the task.
While there, he was able to learn the Khazar's language. Later he sent again in the company of Cyril his brother to convert Moravians in their native tongue. Some western clergy were against it and refused to ordain their students for priesthood. He translated the Bible into the Slavonic languages and pioneered the use of local and vernacular languages in liturgical settings.
