Saint’s Biography
Saint Michael Garicoïts was the eldest son of Pyrenean Farmers, Arnold and Gratianne Garicoïts. His family protected priests from the persecutions of the French Revolution.
Michael worked as a shepherd on neighboring farms. He wanted to go into priesthood but his family was poor to afford his education.
Michael’s grandmother arranged for him to work in the rectory for his education. Michael studied philosophy in Aire, France, theology at the major seminary in Dax, France, and was ordained a priest on December 1823 in the diocese of Bayonne.
In Cambo, he fought Jansenism by promoting frequent communion and devotion of the Sacred Heart.
