Biography
Saint Gall of Clermont was born to Gallic nobility. He was related to Saint Vettius Apagatus. He refused to take part in an arranged marriage to the daughter of an imperial senator. For this reason, he left for the monastery at Cournon near Auvergne, France.
He was a monk for a period of time. Then became a deacon under St. Quinctian. Whom he represented at the court of king Theirry.
St. Gall was the sixteenth bishop of Clermont from 527 – 551 AD. Gal had a major part in the politics of the church as the Council of Clermont was hosted under his episcopate in 535 AD. He was also the uncle and teacher to Gregory of Tours. Gal had a reputation as a miracle worker and as a man that was so meek and humble. For this reason, most who sought to attack him were converted by his gentleness.
