Blessed Sebastian Newdigate was born in Harefield, Middlesex, England and was the younger son of John Newdigate, a king’s sergeant, and Amphelys, daughter and heiress of John Nevill of Sutton, Lincolnshire, a pious family. His sister became a Dominican nun at the Dartford, England convent.
He studied at Cambridge University, married and became a father of one daughter called Amphelys. In 1524, his wife died and later on he became a priest and the privy counselor to King Henry VIII.
He became a Carthuisian monk in the London Charterhouse and when he was given the Oath of Succession to accept Henry VIII’s supremacy over the Church in England, he signed it on June 6 1534, but added the note “in as far as the law of God permits” to the document to indicate his conditional agreement.
He was consequently arrested on May 25 1535 with many other brother monks for loyalty to Rome. He was imprisoned in chains at Marshalsea Prison, and later in the Tower of London where he was hanged.
He was thereafter drawn, and quartered on June 19 1535 and died as a martyr in Tyburn, London, England together with Blessed Humphrey Middlemore and Blessed William Exmew.
He was beatified on December 29 1886 by Pope Leo XIII and we celebrate him with an additional Memorial on May 4 as one of the Carthusian Martyrs.
Saint Deodatus of Nevers
St Deodatus of Nevers was also known as Adeodate, Didier, Die, DieuDonne, or Donato. He was a monk born in Gaul now in modern-day France.
He was the founder of Ebersheimmunster, near Strasbourg, France and served as its first abbot. He also founded Valde-Galilee-Jointures Abbey 660 AD.
He thereafter became the bishop of Nevers, France in 655 AD. He attended the synod of Sens in 657 AD. Later in life, he retired to live as a prayerful hermit in the Vosges and died in 679 AD.
Saint Lambert of Saragossa
St Lambert of Saragossa was also known as Lamberto, or Lambertus. He was a farmer and servant during the period of the Muslim occupation of Spain.
He was beheaded in 900 AD and died as a martyr by his Saracen master. His jawbone was enshrined in Maastricht, Netherlands.
A monastery named after him was built on the traditional site of his execution in 1522, but it was later destroyed in 1808.
Blessed Arnaldo of Liniberio
Blessed Arnaldo of Liniberio was a Mercedarian prior in Barcelona, Spain. He ransomed 156 Christians in Morocco and 32 in Granada, Spain who had been enslaved by Muslims.
He died of natural causes and was buried near the altar of the church of his convent in Barcelona, Spain.
Saint Hildegrin of Chalons
Saint Hildegrin of Chalons, also known as Hildegrin of Werden was the younger brother of Saint Ludger of Utrecht.
He worked with Ludger to evangelize the Saxons and became bishop of Chalons-sur-Marne, France, in 802 AD.
Later in life, he retired to live as a Benedictine monk at Werden Abbey in Germany, where he was later elected its abbot. He died in 827 AD of natural causes.

Saint Adleida and Saint Lupo of Bergamo were the parents of Saint Grata of Bergamo. They were converts who died as martyrs.
Saint Deodatus of Jointures
Saint Deodatus of Jointures also known as Adéodat, Didier, Dieu-Donné or Dié was a bishop who founded the monastery of Val-de-Galilée, Jointures, France, and served as its first abbot. He died in 680 AD.
Saint Gaudentius of Arezzo
Saint Gaudentius of Arezzo was a bishop who was martyred in the persecutions of Valentian I along with 53 companions whose names have not come down to us. He died in 364 AD in Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy.

Saint Culmatius of Arezzo was a deacon who was martyred in the persecutions of Valentian I along with 53 companions in 364 AD in Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy.
Saint Zosimus of Umbria
Saint Zosimus of Umbria was martyred in the persecutions of Trajan after being beheaded in 110 AD in Umbria, Italy.
Saint Innocent of Le Mans
Saint Innocent of Le Mans was the bishop of Le Mans, France, for over 40 years. He died in 559 AD.
