Saint Oudoceus Biography
Saint Oudoceus was dedicated to God at birth by his parents. This is despite his parents being local leaders in Brittany in France. Oudoceus was also the nephew and student of saint Theliau.
His associations with the Cathedral Church of Llandaff are extremely strong. All indications point to him being an early patron of the church there. He is said to have placed relics of Saint Teilo there. According to the “Life of St. Oudoceus,” King Einion, was out to hunt for a stag in the rocks and woods near river Wye. After the stag reached the cloak of Oudoceus, it lay down upon it. The dogs were then unable to touch it. He ultimately retired to Llandogo, which is near Tintern. On 2 July, he died there. He was reportedly buried at the church in Llandaff. Now the location of the present Llandaff Cathedral. Saint Oudoceus is one of the three saints to whom the church is dedicated.
Biography
In his 12th-century hagiography in the Book of Llandaff, we learn he was the son to King Budic of Brittany. Being born there soon after his father’s return from exile in Dyfed. Annauued, His mother, was believed to be the sister to Saint Teilo and Budic. She promised Oudoceus he could learn about life in the Church from St. Teilo.
Oudoceus went to Wales and ended up succeeding Teilo as the Bishop of Llandaff. He is believed to be the brother to saints Ismael Bishop of Rhos and Tyfei who was a martyr. Though it was impossible for Oudeceus to have been the nephew or immediate successor of St. Teilo. This was because St. Teilo lived about a hundred years earlier. Also, there is no proof that Llandaff was the center of a diocese before the early 11th century. St. Oudoceus might have been a Bishop of Teilo. Back then probably based at Llandeilo Fawr.
In the 12th century, the book of Llandaff in its entirity was rewritten. It became a means to improve the prestige of Llandaff.
