Saint Pedro Poveda Castroverde Biography
Saint Pedro Poveda Castroverde, Pedro grew up in a pious family and was early called to the priesthood. He entered the seminary in Jaen, Spain, in 1889, then in the seminary in Guadix, Grenada, Spain. Ordained on April 17, 1897.
He taught at the seminary, continued his studies and received his licentiate in theology in 1900 in Seville, Spain. He served in Guadix a group of people who were so poor that they lived in caves. He built a school for the children and offered adult vocational training.
Father Pedro was transferred to Madrid, Spain, and in 1906 appointed canon of the Basilica of Covadonga, Asturius.
His time in Guadix had impressed Pedro with the need for education for the poor. He prayed about it and wrote about the need for professional education for teachers. In 1911 he founded the Academy of Saint Teresa of Avila, the foundation of the modern Institución Teresiana. He joined the Apostolic Union of World Priests in 1912, wrote about the need for more teachers and opened teacher training centers. He taught again at the seminary in Jaen, where he served as spiritual director of the Catechetical Center Los Operarios, and at the Teachers Training School. In 1914, the first student residence for women in Spain was opened in Madrid. In 1921 he was transferred to Madrid and appointed chaplain of the royal palace. In 1922 he was appointed to the Central Board against illiteracy and continued to work with the Teresian Association. In 1924 it received papal approval, and the association operates today in 30 countries.
Martyr during the Spanish Civil War.
