Saint’s Biography
Saint Phaolô Lê Bao Tinh was born around 1793 in the Vietnamese province of Thanh Hoá. At the age of fifteen, he entered the seminary. In 1837 the bishop sent Paul Le-Bao-Tinh to carry out missionary activity in the unexplored region of Laos. In 1841 Paul was arrested and subjected to repeated torture. Paul was sent to exile until 1848 when the new sovereign Tu-Duc granted the general amnesty on the occasion of his ascent to the throne.
Upon returning from exile Paul was ordained as a priest by Bishop Pietro Andrea Retord. During his time he wrote a book of “Homilies” for use by the local clergy and other religious writings. In 1857 was arrested again, sentenced to be beheaded.
The Pope St. Pius X beatified the martyr Paul Le-Bao-Tinh on May 2, 1909, and finally, John Paul II canonized him on May 6, 1984.
