Biography
Pope Saint Leo IV, Cardinal–priest. 103rd pope. He saw the Saracens assault Rome, Italy in 846; upon his rising, to forestall its repeat he fortified the city and its rural areas, assembling a wall around the Vatican, strengthening the piece of Rome still called the Leonine City. Revamped St. Peter’s Basilica. Condemned St. Ignatius of Constantinople for dismissing bishops without his insight. Delegated Louis II joint Holy Roman Emperor with Lothair I in 850. Delegated Alfred as ruler of England in 853.
