St. Porphyrius of Gaza was born to a wealthy family. He then chose to live as a hermit in the desert of Skete, Egypt. Porphyrius relocated to Palestine om the bank of Jordan river. He was later ordained as a priest in Jerusalem and later a reluctant bishop of Gaza. Porphyrius converted almost all of his diocese and eliminated paganism,
