👉 Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order
The Seven Founders of the Order of Servites, religious are also known as the Confraternity of Our Lady, Order of Servants of Mary, Servant Friars or The Seven Holy Founders. They were named the fifth mendicant order by Pope Martin V.
It was founded in 1233 by

The Founders received a vision of Our Lady on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1240. In her hand, she held the black habit, and a nearby angel bore a scroll reading Servants of Mary.
Mary gave them the following instructions,
- You will found a new order, and you will be my witnesses throughout the world.
- Your name will be Servants of Mary.
- Your rule will be that of Saint Augustine.
- Your distinctive sign will be the black scapular, in memory of my sufferings.
Their first residence was at La Camarzia, near Florence, Italy. They later moved to a more secluded place at Monte Senario where the Blessed Virgin Mary conferred on them their habit, and instructed them to follow the Rule of Saint Augustine and to admit associates.
They obtained their official approval in 1249 and were subsequently confirmed in 1256. In 1276, the congregation was suppressed but later in 1304 they were partially reapproved and confirmed by Brief in 1928.
The order grew so rapidly that by 1285 they numbered 10,000 members with houses in various countries like Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. In the early 14th century, they had around 100 convents and also missions in Crete and India.
During the Reformation in Germany, their numbers were reduced drastically, however, it flourished elsewhere. The order also got a setback from political headwinds in the late 18th and early 19th centuries but still flourished in England in 1867, and in America in 1870.
The Servites venerate in a special manner the Seven Dolors of Our Lady and take solemn vows. They cultivate both the interior and the active life, giving missions and teaching.
