Saint Samson of York Biography
Saint Samson of York, born the Welsh nobility; Brother of Saint Gwenyth of Cornwall and Saint Veep. At the age of seven Samson was sent to the Abbey of Llanwit Major at South Glamorgan to be taught by the Abbot Saint Illtud. Consecrated in the year 512. Retreated to a small monastery on Caldey Island to deepen his prayer life. later chose his abbot.
At 516, Samson traveled to Ireland with some Irish monks to learn from them. However, Samson soon gained the reputation of holiness and many came to him to pray in their name. Samson did not feel comfortable with his fame and returned to the anonymity of Cornwall.
Bishop in 520, consecrated by Saint Dubricius. Soon after, Samson received a vision from God asking him to evangelize Brittany. He and some monks founded a monastery in Dol which later became the center of a new diocese. Samson spent the rest of his life in Brittany and became known for wisdom, holiness and devotion. He is considered one of the greatest Welsh saints.
