St Andrew Kaggwa, also known as Anderea Kahwa, is one of the Martyrs of Uganda. He was born in 1856 in Kkooki Bugangazzi Bukuumi Parish, Uganda and died as a martyr on May 26 1886 at Munyonyo, Uganda. We celebrate his feast day on May 26 and June 3 every year in the Catholic Church.

St Andrew Kaggwa Life History
St Andrew Kaggwa’s father was Kahawa Kabijenge. He was born in 1856 in Kkooki Bugangazzi Bukuumi Parish. When he was a child, he was captured and brought to King Muteesa I’s palace during the Buganda raids.
He grew up in the palace and the King loved him very much. He was trained as a police officer and became a good shooter and also a bandmaster He also learned carpentry and how to clean guns. He learned how to read, speak and write in Swahili and Arabic.
At first, he joined the Muslim faith, then protestant but after the arrival of Catholic Missionaries, he converted to Catholicism.
He was baptized on April 30 1882 by Father Pere Simeon Lourdel (Fr. Mapeera) and became very committed to teaching others the faith in actions and words.
St Andrew Kaggwa worked for both King Muteesa and King Mwanga but due to the jealousy of Prime Minister Kintu, he was beheaded and his hands chopped off at the Prime Minister’s banana plantation on May 26 1886.
