St Desiderius of Vienne Life History
St Desiderius of Vienne was born in Autun, France, and educated in Vienne. After he became the Bishop of Vienne he ran into trouble with the Frankish queen Brunhildis (Brunhilda).
Brunhilda was queen consort of Austrasia, part of Francia, by marriage to the Merovingian king Sigebert I of Austrasia. She was also regent for her son, grandson, and great-grandson.
St Desiderius spoke against her immorality and incestuous behaviour in the loyal courts and the legitimacy of her children. She in return accused him of paganism, an accusation that he was cleared by Pope St Gregory the Great.
Bishop Desiderius was exiled and deposed from his see for his utterances. Upon return, after four years, he was assassinated by Brunhilda’s hitmen and died as a martyr in 608 AD in Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne, France. His relics are enshrined in Vienne, France.
