St Madeleine Sophie Barat Life History
St Madeleine-Sophie Barat was a Roman Catholic nun and founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart. She was born in a peasant family in Joigny, Burgundy, France and tutored by her brother. Deacon Louis.
When the French Revolution ended, Madeleine and Louis (at this time a priest) went to Paris. Louis superior appointed Madeleine to be the head of an educational order dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The first Convent of the Sacred Heart was opened in 1801 at Amiens, France and in 1802 she became its first superior.
Madeleine went to Grenoble, France in 1804 and founded her second convent where she received St Rose Philippine Duchesne into the order and she became its first missionary.
Madeleine was elected superior general of the Sacred Heart order for life in 1806 and in 1826, the Society of the Sacred Heart received its ecclesiastical approval. The order spread to many countries in the world.
