Today’s Bible Verse of the Day Reflections
Jesus sends out His disciples to the towns and villages to proclaim the Kingdom of God. Of most importance is that He tells them that their provisions will be catered for by the people they preach to.
The disciples heed to this command of Jesus and hit the road without murmurs and questions. Jesus Christ had given them powers to do whatever is required proclaim the Kingdom of God and to help the people Know, Love and Glorify Him. Now, here Jesus tells them that without cost they have been given the powers and therefore without cost they will serve the people. Lets explain this!
In the first place Jesus tells the disciples not to carry anything for their upkeep then thereafter tells them not to accept any payment for their work of preaching. This can be a bit confusing! But Jesus means that the disciples should not profit from the powers vested on them. It means that the ticket to enter into the Kingdom of God is free, No one should ask for money for self gain.
This should not be confused with giving of church offering or tithe. These ones go to the Church service and not for personal businesses. The clergy’s upkeep is part of Church service. When we keep our clergy well they are then able to continue with the work of Christ and as Jesus says, the labourers deserve their keep.
Therefore, let us endeavour to provide upkeep for our clergy so that they can continue to spread the Word of God to the whole world. Let us not make our clergy flee from our parishes due to our miserly and stinginess. If they leave our towns and parishes and shake off the dust of their feet, Jesus warns us that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for us.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we pray for Your providence as we continue with Your work of proclaiming the Good News. May we have enough for ourselves and for our clergy so that we may all spread Your Gospel to the world. Amen.
