Blessed Antonio Rosmini-Serbati Biography

Blessed Antonio Rosmini-Serbati was an Italian Roman Catholic priest. Also a philosopher. He was the founder of the Rosminians. Officially known as the Institute of Charity. Also, he is said to have pioneered the concept of social justice, and a major part in Italian Liberal Catholicism.

He studied from home and then attended the University of Padua, in Italy for three years. On April 21, 1821, he was ordained at Chioggia, Italy. In 1822 he received his doctorate in canon law and theology. After that, was when began work in Rome, Italy in 1823. He studied philosophy for the next three years. Concentrating on the works of Saint Thomas Aquinas.

His main teaching was of how the human mind is endowed with an innate cognition. A single state of ideal being and mental form. A condition of knowledge and light of reason.

Apart from starting the Rosminians, he also founded the Rosminian Sisters of Providence in 1828. By 1835 they were having missions in Italy and England. The congregation is devoted to education and charity. His ideas and natural theology and his publication Trattato della Coscienza received heavy criticisms. Forty of his propositions were eventually condemned by the  Congregation of the Inquisition back in 1887. Blessed Pope Pius IX appointed him as a consultant to deliberate on the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception.
