Iustus Takayama Ukon was born of a wealthy family of large landowners in Japan. After learning Christianity, he converted at the age of 12 after which he married and became a layman. During the ban of Christianity by Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he refused to give up on his faith where he lost all his lands and properties and sent to exile in Philippine.
