Saints Cosmas and Damian, martyrs were born in Arabia in the 3rd century AD.

They were Arab twin brothers who studied medicine and practiced as doctors in Syria. They charged no fee for their services and were consequently referred to as ‘the silverless’.

By this, they attracted many people to Christianity. They died as martyrs around 303 AD during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian.

We celebrate their feast day on September 26 every year in the Catholic Church.

Saints Cosmas and Damian Life History

Very little is known about the life and times of Saints Cosmas and Damian. What is known is that they were twins born in Arabia and were doctors.

They dedicated their lives, time, and resources to tend to the sick at no cost and this made them very famous. During treatment, these saints preached good news to their patients thereby making Christianity grow very fast in Syria.

When Diocletian persecutions of Christians started in Syria, it was evident that Saints Cosmas and Damian would become the first victims.

They were arrested after Lysias, the Prefect of Cilicia gave the orders. The twins were ordered to recant their faith, otherwise, they would be tortured but they adamantly refused.

They were beheaded and died as martyrs for their faith in Jesus Christ together with their three brothers, Anthimus, Leontius, and Euprepius.

After the death of Sts Cosmas and Damian, many people sought their intercessions and were cured. It is said that Roman Emperor Justinian I who ruled between 527 AD to 565 AD, sought the intercession of Saints Cosmas and Damian and got cured of a dangerous illness.

Consequently, he restored the city of Cyrus in their honour. Many other Churches were built in their honour around the Roman Empire.
