The Canadian Martyrs are also known as the North American Martyrs. They are the eight Jesuit missionaries who worked at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons.
Because they were foreign missionary Christians, they were unwelcome among the natives. In the mid-17th century, when there was a war between the Iroquois people and the Huron, these missionaries were ritually tortured and killed on various dates in Canada and Upper New York.
In Canada, their feast day is celebrated the September 26 and in the General Roman Calendar, it is on October 19 every year in the Catholic Church.
These martyrs are;
- St Isaac Jogues, killed in 1646
- St Jean de Brébeuf, killed in 1649
- St René Goupil, killed in 1642
