Saint’s Biography
Saint Benedict of Szkalka was a Benedictine monk at the Saint Hippolyte monastery on Mount Zobor outside Nitra in modern Slovakia in the late 10th century. He later became a hermit with his friend saint and spiritual teacher Andrew Zorar.
Death
In 1009 when Andrew died Benedict continued to live in the cave for three years until he was strangled to death in 1012 by a gang of robbers looking for treasure. They dumped his body in the Vah River, but his body was found perfectly preserved a year later watched over by an eagle. In 1083 his relics were transferred to the Cathedral of Saint Emmeram in Nitra, Slovakia.
