Saint Ebbe of Minster-in-Thanet Biography

St Ebbe of Minster-in-Thanet was also known as Domina Aebbe. She was the Little girl of Prince Eormenred of Kent, England; great little girl of King Edbald.

Sister of Saint Ermengitha, Saint Etheldreda, Saint Ethelred, and Saint Ethelbert of Eastry. Hitched to King Merewalh of Magonset.

Mother of Saint Mildred of Thanet, Saint Milburga, and Saint Milgitha, and a child named Merefin who passed on extremely youthful.

In 664, Ebbe’s cousin Egbert rose to the royal position of Kent. Stressed over cases to the crown by Ethelred and Ethelbert, Egbert had them killed.

He later atoned of the wrongdoing and offered Queen Ebbe remuneration for the misfortune (weregild). Ebbe picked an endowment of as much land as her manageable doe could go around in one course; the ruler concurred, and the Isle of Thanet was picked as the site.

The Lord’s counsel, Thunor, who had suggested the homicides, blamed Ebbe for black magic, mounted his pony, and set off in a quest for the doe; the earth speedily opened and gulped him.

The doe surrounded an enormous plot of land, which turned into the site of the cloister of Minster-on-Thanet, devoted to the Blessed Virgin; today the region is known as Ebbsfleet in memory of Ebbe.

On the passing of King Merewalh in 673 AD, Ebbe entered the religious community as its first abbess.
