St Ebbe of Minster-in-Thanet Life History

St. Ebbe of Minster-in-Thanet, born in the 7th century AD, was the daughter of Prince Eormenred of Kent, England, and the granddaughter of King Edbald.

She had several notable siblings, including Saint Ermengitha, Saint Etheldreda, Saint Ethelred, and Saint Ethelbert of Eastry.

Ebbe married King Merewalh of Magonset and was the mother of Saint Mildred of Thanet, Saint Milburga, Saint Milgitha, and a son named Merefin, who tragically died at a young age.

In the year 664 AD, Ebbe’s cousin, Egbert, became the ruler of Kent. Fearing potential claims to the throne by Ethelred and Ethelbert, Egbert ordered their murders.

Later, he felt remorse for his actions and offered Queen Ebbe compensation for the loss, known as weregild.

Ebbe made an unusual request: she asked for as much land as her tame doe could encircle in one course.

King Egbert agreed to her request, and the Isle of Thanet was selected as the location.

Thunor, the king’s advisor who had advised the murders, accused Ebbe of witchcraft and mounted his horse to chase the doe, but the earth miraculously swallowed him.

The doe circled a significant piece of land, which ultimately became the site of the Minster-on-Thanet monastery, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.

Today, this area is called Ebbsfleet in memory of Ebbe. Following the death of King Merewalh in 673 AD, Ebbe entered the convent as its first abbess.

St. Ebbe died on November 19, 694 AD, at Minster-in-Thanet, Kent, England.
