Saint’s Biography

Saint Germanus of Constantinople was the son of senator Justinian of Constantinople and was educated as a cleric. After being ordained as a priest, Germanus later became dean of the clergy of the famous basilica of Santa Sofia. Bishop of Cyzicus.

In 715, following his appointment as patriarch of Constantinople, he immediately summoned a synod which proclaimed the Catholic faith. Germanus opposed the Monothelites, Iconoclasts, and their mentor, emperor Leo the Isaurian.

He was forced to resign his position in 730 and sent into exile and died three years later at Platonium of natural causes. Several of his writings, including homilies and hymns, have survived.
