Saint Josephine Bakhita Biography
Saint Josephine Bakhita was born to a wealthy Sudanese family. At the age of 9, she was kidnapped by slave traders where she was given the name Bakhita. Bakhita was sold and resold in various markets of Khartoum, El Obeid and finally was bought by an Italian consul, Callisto Legnani in 1883.
She accompanied Legnani to Italy in 1885 and worked as a nanny in the house Augusto Michieli. Josephine was treated well in Italy and grew to love the country. She later converted to Christian where she joined the church on January 9, 1890, where she took the name, Josephine.
Josephine joined the Institute of Canossian Daughters of Charity in Italy taking her vows in Verona, Italy on December 8, 1896, where she served as a Canossian Sister for the next fifty years.
