Saint Juthware Biography

Saint Juthware was a British Virgin from Dorset, she was a Christian martyr. St. Juthware was the sister to St. Sidwell. She is believed to have lived in the 6th century. Her remains were translated to Sherborne in the reign of Ethelred the Unready.

According to John Capgrave’s Nova Legenda Angliae, St. Juthware was a very religious girl. She was the victim of a jealous stepmother. She was known to pray and fast very often and frequently gave to the poor. After her father passed, she started to experience chest pains. Which was attributed to her sorrow.

As a cure, her stepmother advised the use of two soft cheese, applied to her breasts. Her stepmother then told her son, Bana, that St. Juthwara was pregnant. Afterward, Bana examined her underclothes and found they were moist. Bana immediately cut off her head. There was a spring of water that appeared at the spot. Miraculously, St. Juthware picked up her own head and walked with it back to the church. Due to the guilt, Bana repented of his deed and became a monk, founding a monastery of Gerber. The monastery was later renamed as Le Relecq on a battlefield.
