Saint Kentigern’s Life History

Saint Kentigern, also known as Mungo was born in 518 AD from Princess Teneu and Owain mabi Urien who one account is that her mother was raped by Owain man Urien and another account is that Owain and Teneu had a love affair while Owain was still married to Pernawen and that the king separated the two after Teneu got pregnant.

Mungo was raised by Saint Serf who was responsible for his nickname. While under the wing of Saint Serf, it is said that he restored the life of a robin that had been killed by his classmates and that while left in charge of a fire, he slept and the fire went out but he restarted the fire with just a hazel branch.

He began his missionary work when he was 25 years old and was said to have lived a life full of austerities and converting a number of people due to his way of life.

It was said that he built a church across the water from an extinct volcano next to the Molendinar Burn.

Mungo left the area after an anti-christian movement in Strathckyde, under King Morken compelled him to leave and he proceeded to Wales and moved to Gwynned where he established a cathedral at Llanelwy.

He once saved a queen from execution, after he proved that her husband had tried to frame her for infidelity with another person on the account that she gave her wedding ring to her lover. He ordered a fisherman to go and fish and fish was brought to him with a ring in its mouth. It was discovered later that the King had thrown the ring into the river in order to bring up those accusations.

He returned to Glasgow and lived with the community that grew up around him. It is here that old age caught up to him and he grew feeble to a point a bandage was used to set his chin in place. He is said to have died in his bath on January 13 614 AD aged 96.
