St Martin-Luc Huin was born on 20 October 1836 in Guyonvelle, Haute-Marne, France. He was one of ten children born to a pious vintner‘s family. He began to study theology in 1851, studying with missionaries who had returned to teach and was ordained as a diocesan parish priest on 29 June 1861 AD.

Martin joined the Société des Missions Etrangères (Paris Foreign Missions Society) on 20 August 1863 AD. Martin was assigned to the missions in  Korea in 1864 AD, and after studying the language and customs, he arrived at Chosun on 27 May 1865 AD.
