Biography
Pope Saint Agapitus I was related to San Gregorio Magno and to San Felice IV. He was the son of the priest Giordano rector of the church of the SS. Giovanni and Paolo on the Celio in Rome. He was elected Pope on May 13, 535.
His reign lasted just over eleven months but although he was not the author of great events, great events took place in those few months. The emperor of the East Giustiniano conquered the remaining part of the Middle East and much of northeastern Africa, already the kingdom of the Goths.
Pope Agapito was forced to undertake a hard journey to meet the Prince in Byzantium in order, to allow Catholic faith. They received him with great honors but he could not make Giustiniano agree.
Death
After the fatigues of the journey the Pope became seriously ill. He died on April 22nd 536 of natural causes . Pope remain are in Saint Peter’s Basilica, Rome, Italy.
