St Mary Magdalene de Pazzi Life History
Caterina De’ Pazzi was born in one of the wealthiest families in Florence, Italy. Her father was Camillo di Geri de’ Pazzi, her mother was Maria Buondelmonti and her paternal grandmother was Lucrezia Mannucci.
Caterina de’ Pazzi was taught how to meditate at the age of nine by the family chaplain. The Chaplin gave her a book that explained how to meditate on the Passion of Christ.
It is at this same age that she started the practice of mortifying the flesh by flogging herself while wearing a crown of thorns she made at home.
At the age of 10, she received her First Holy Communion and also made a vow of virginity. At the age of twelve, in her mother’s presence, she experienced her first religious ecstasy. From this time on, she continued to experience many varied mystical experiences.
It happened that at around the age of fourteen while schooling in the monastery of nuns of the Order of Malta, she was informed that she was to wed a young nobleman but Caterina reminded her father of her vow of virginity.
Her father dropped the idea of marrying her off and she went back to the monastic life. This was around the year 1580 when she chose the Carmelite monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence because there they allowed her to receive Holy Communion daily.
Three years later, she was accepted as a novice by that community on January 30 1583, and adopted the religious name of Sister Mary Magdalene.
After one year of being a novice Mary Magdalene de Pazzi fell sick. One of her fellow sisters asked her how she could sustain so much pain without looking back. pointing to the crucifix Mary said,
Those who call to mind the sufferings of Christ, and who offer up their own to God through His passion, find their pains sweet and pleasant.

Caterina De’ Pazzi seemed as if she was nearly dying, therefore her superiors arranged that she professes her religious vows in a private ceremony.
Immediately after her profession, for about two hours, she fell into ecstasy. For the next forty days she fell into ecstasy every time after Communion.
Saint Mary Magdalene de Pazzi confessor asked her to dictate her experiences to her fellow nuns so as to preserve the revelations for future use and study. Five large volumes were filled over the next six years.
Caterina De’ Pazzi died on May 25 1607, at the age of 41, and was buried in the choir of the monastery chapel.
In 1668 AD, During her canonization, her body was found miraculously incorrupt. Her relics are interred in the Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi Monastery in Careggi, Italy.
