Saint Munchin of Limerick Life History

St Munchino/Muchin of Limerick was a bishop, Known as “Il Saggio”, its name means “little monk”.

His memory is linked to his foundation of Innis Ibhton on the Shannon in Ireland, around which arose and developed Limerick which takes its name from a variant of his, Luimnich and of which he is today Patron.

It is supposed to be from the Clan of the Dal Cais who lived in the Ennistimon region, west coast of County Clare.

First bishop of Limerick (Luimneach), occupying the see in the 7th century. A prince gave him the island, possibly in exchange for Munchin giving up a claim to the throne. Established the school at Mungret and served as abbot to its 1,500 monks.

The island of Limerick was given to him by a local prince but today it is doubted whether he was a bishop. Among the hypotheses also that he founded a school in Mungret. He died in the 7th century.
