Biography

St. Nicasius of Jerusalem was a soldier. He served in the Hospitaller Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. He was the son to Roberto de Burgio and his wife Aldegonda. St. Nicasius was a descendant of the Saracens on his father’s side. On his mother’s side, he descended from the Normans. He was born in Sicily, probably in the Palermo region, to the Kameti also known as Camuto family. They would later be called de Burgio. Both he and his brother Ferrandino enrolled in the Hospitaller Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem.

Both brothers answered the call of Roger de Moulins to traveled to the Holy Land. He was captured during the battle of Hattin and was decapitated in the presence of Saladin after refusing to convert to Islam
