He was a layman catechist in the apostolic vicariate of West Tonkin (in modern Vietnam). He worked with the Society of Foreign Missionaries and they were imprisoned and tortured for their faith for three years during the persecutions of Emperor Minh Mang. He was repeatedly ordered to denounce Christianity but he refused. He died as a martyr after been beheaded on 28th April, 1840 in Ninh Bình, Vietnam. Pope John Paul II canonized him on 19th June, 1988.
