Saint’s Biography
Saint Peter of Verona was born in 1205 in Verona, Northern Italy. His parents were followers of the heretics.
Strangely enough, they educated Peter in a Catholic school and at the University of Bologna, Italy. At 16 St. Peter became a Dominican upon hearing the teaching of Saint Dominic.
Peter became a priest after the death of Saint Dominic and devoted himself to helping others.
He preached to Catholics and people flocked to hear him, and in a short time, Peter was famous.
Peter preached on church stairs and public places, and people loved and honored him, but the Catharists hated him and tried to slander him.
The Catharists directed a false accusation against him for having released strangers and women into his cell. But the Church understood that it all slander.
In 1234 peter was appointed a judicial officer of the Milan area, and in 1251 Peter made the head of the judicial in most of northern Italy, including Venice, Genoa, Bologna and the province of Marche di Ancona.
Now he could fight even stronger against the heretics. St. Peter was also a strong and discreet guide for nuns and worked to get more women to become Dominican nuns.
He was eager for Bible studies and spiritual life and regretted having to leave his cell so often anger.
Peter the Martyr exercised his office with indulgence and justice, unlike the violent acts that were often committed when the judicial Tribunals were in power.
He spent a lot of time and effort bringing back the arrested people back to Catholic doctrine, instead of wishing them punishment or death. But Peter did not exercise his office for so long.
Death
His life was often in jeopardy because of his great success. The Catharists killed him when he was going to Milan from the Como monastery, where he had celebrated Easter, and on the way, he was assaulted by two assassins who split his head with an ax.
His companion Dominic was stabbed to death. Peter left his soul to God with the words of St. Stephen. Tradition says that the dying Peter with his own blood wrote the words (” I believe in God”). The murder happened on April 6, 1252.
