1st Reading – ACTS 28:16-20, 30-31

16 When we arrived in Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself with a soldier guarding him.

17 After three days Paul called the local Jewish leaders to a meeting. When they had gathered, he said to them, “My fellow Israelites, even though I did nothing against our people or the customs that we received from our ancestors, I was made a prisoner in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.

18 After questioning me, the Romans wanted to release me, because they found that I had done nothing for which I deserved to die.

19 But when the Jews opposed this, I was forced to appeal to the Emperor, even though I had no accusation to make against my own people.

20 That is why I asked to see you and talk with you. As a matter of fact, I am bound in chains like this for the sake of him for whom the people of Israel hope.

30 For two years Paul lived in a place he rented for himself, and there he welcomed all who came to see him.

31 He preached about the Kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ, speaking with all boldness and freedom.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalms 11:4, 5 AND 7

R. (see 7b) The just will gaze on your face, O Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.

4 The LORD is in his holy temple;
the LORD’s throne is in heaven.
His eyes behold,
his searching glance is on mankind.
R. The just will gaze on your face, O Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.

5 The LORD searches the just and the wicked;
the lover of violence he hates.
7 For the LORD is just, he loves just deeds;
the upright shall see his face.
R. The just will gaze on your face, O Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Alleluia – John 16:7, 13

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
7 I will send to you the Spirit of truth, says the Lord;
13 he will guide you to all truth.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel – John 21:20-25

20 Peter turned round and saw behind him that other disciple, whom Jesus loved – the one who had leaned close to Jesus at the meal and had asked, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”

21 When Peter saw him, he asked Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus answered him, “If I want him to live until I come, What concern is it of yours? You follow me.”

23 So a report spread among the followers of Jesus that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he said, “If I want him to live until I come? What concern is it of yours?”

24 He is the disciple who spoke of these things, the one who also wrote them down; and we know that what he said is true.

25 Now, there are many other things that Jesus did. If they were all written down one by one, I suppose that the whole world could not hold the books that would be written.
