St Bertha of Val d’Or Biography
Saint Bertha of Avenay was married to Saint Gundebert of Gumber and when he retired to a monastery in Ireland, Bertha became a Benedictine nun. St. Bertha founded the convent at Avenay in the diocese of Châlons-sur-Marne, France. During the time drought hit the region, she saw a vision of Saint Peter the Apostle led her to a spring of water. Later the place became a healing well. St. Bertha was a widow who was killed by her in-laws in 685 AD for distributing Gumbert’s estate to the poor. St. Bertha is a martyr.
