Bible Verse of the Day – Wednesday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time
2 When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.Matthew 6:1-6
3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
4 so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

Today’s Bible Verse of the Day Reflections – Matthew 6:1-6
Everything we have or own belongs to the Lord our God. Even we ourselves belong to God. We cannot claim to own anything because we met it here at birth and we will leave it here after death.
From the anecdote above, we realize that almsgiving is giving back a token of appreciation to the Lord for the much He has given us. The Lord doesn’t necessarily need it, but He wants us to cultivate gratitude towards Him.
The only thing God wants from us is to Know Him, Love Him and Glorify Him. Almsgiving is part of loving and glorifying God. So Jesus tells us today that when showing gratitude to the Lord, we should not seek public attention. This attention should be sought from God and God can be well accessed in the most private of places.
Jesus tells us that God will notice us and reward us profusely when we seek His attention in private. In this regard, let only you and God know what you are offering.
Jesus reminds us that those who seek public attention during almsgiving, fasting and prayer have already received their reward. We do not know this reward but your guess is as good as mine that it is not a nice reward.
Let us today, learn to desist from showing off to the public when it comes to Prayer, fasting and almsgiving to the Lord. Jesus has taught us how to pray, give alms and fast. Let us choose the secret way as it is the one that we will get repaid profusely by God.
Prayer: Lord receive our alms and prayers that we offer to You in secret. May You give us the strength to always decline the invitation by the evil one to show off to others when we pray and Fast. Jesus We Love You. Amen.
